Germans and Americans celebrated their friendship at a late afternoon reception hosted by the U.S. Consulate General in Frankfurt. City Treasurer Uwe Becker praised the bonds of German American friendship and recalled the support of Presidents Ronald Reagan and George Herbert Bush for German reunification. Consul General Jo Ellen Powell welcomed approximately 400 guests and emphasized that despite the importance of high-level exchanges the links between ordinary Americans and Germans were what made German American friendship run deep. She noted that travel by Germans to the U.S. had increased by 10 percent in the last year and the number of Americans traveling to Germany had increased by 15 percent over the same period. Five winners of a contest at the September 20th "Hello World" Student Exchange Information Fair were announced by Public Affairs Officer Jeanine Collins; most of the winning students said they proposed to study English. The Check Six U.S. Air Force band from enlivened the reception with its swing tunes. | Photogallery
