November 22, 2005. On November 22, Consul General Peter Bodde gave the keynote address at the annual Thanksgiving dinner hosted by Germany's oldest group dedicated to German-American friendship, the Steuben-Schurz Society. The group helped 15 American college students from Louisiana avoid the holiday blues by hosting them at the event. The Society also extends them invitations to join in the group's monthly activities in the hopes that they feel at home in Hesse and the society. The students, whose studies in the U.S. were disrupted by Hurricane Katrina, are now studying at various schools in Hesse under the sponsorship of the Hesse government and other supporting companies and organizations. In her speech, the Society's president, Dr. Ingrid Gräfin zu Solms-Wildenfels, also thanked the Consul General for his continuing support of the USA-Interns program.
On November 23, Frankfurt’s Public Affairs Officer joined the German-American Institute (GAI) in Freiburg for their annual Thanksgiving Dinner. The PAO spoke to the group about U.S. views of the new German government and prospects for improved relations quoting extensively from Ambassador Timken’s recent opinion piece in the Berliner Zeitung.
