Sister CitiesGerman-American Sister City Programs |
Municipal partnerships between German and American cities and communities, as well as programs to promote personal contact between Germans and Americans, are an important part of the transatlantic relationship. In the US consular region surrounding Frankfurt am Main, the number of such programs has grown ever larger throughout the years. Many of these programs began right after the Second World War, and a number of them celebrated their 60th anniversaries, for example Crailsheim/Worthington, MN (2007). The four federal states in the Frankfurt consular district - Baden-Württemberg, Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Saarland - are home to a number of German-American partnership agreements (on both the state and local levels) and so-called "Friendship Programs." Such "Friendship Programs" are programs and conferences which have not yet been made official through formal agreements. The number of partnerships grows every year: In 2007, the Main-Taunus-Kreis and Loudoun County, VA, signed a partnership agreement. Sister Cities Newsletter 13, Spring 2008 (Pdf) |
