At the Frankfurt city library, she engaged librarians from all over the world in a webchat organized by the state department during which she encouraged them to organize more programs like poetry readings, book talks, and political discussions to bring more people into the library. At the evening program at the German National Library Ms. Pearl introduced her theory that libraries are like three-legged foot stools, and like any good stool, the legs need to be of equal length to provide maximum usefulness and stability. In library terms, those "legs" are technology, reader’s advisory services, and outreach and programming. She advocated that more attention be paid to the latter two services in order to keep libraries at the center of their communities. A lively discussion concluded the program.
