November 14, 2006. Some 30 active-duty service members from 19 different countries took the oath of allegiance and became the newest U.S. Citizens during a special overseas military naturalization ceremony held at the U.S. Consulate in Frankfurt, Germany, on November 14. Dr. Emilio Gonzalez, Director of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, presided over the ceremony for the service members, their families and friends. An immigrant to the United States himself, Dr. Gonzalez thanked the service members for their dedication in defending America's ideals of freedom and democracy with their lives. He also presented a certificate of posthumous citizenship to the widow of David Jimenez-Almazan from Mexico in recognition of the ultimate sacrifice her husband had made for his adopted country. SGT Jimenez was killed in Hit, Iraq, on August 27, 2006.

Consul General Powell emphasized in her remarks the role of immigrants in the United States: "Throughout our history, immigrants have added their contributions and cultures to America, making our nation strong. [...] The society that you defend and are about to join as Citizens was built on the dreams and determination of the millions of immigrants who came here before you." (Full text)

Together with Dr. Gonzalez and Jeffrey Sapko, Officer in Charge of the US Citizenship and Immigration Services in Frankfurt, Ms. Powell welcomed the new citizens to the United States.
