Journalists discuss future NATO roles with U.S. and German Diplomats and Officers

Journalists discuss future NATO roles with U.S. and German diplomats and officers.

December 15, 2005. Eight newspaper and radio journalists from southwest Germany got an inside view of how the NATO alliance is being transformed to meet 21st Century challenges during a special three day program sponsored by the U.S. Consulates General in Frankfurt and Munich and the U.S. Embassy in Berlin. The tour included a visit to NATO’s multinational AWACS unit in Geilenkirchen followed by meetings in Brussels and Mons with representatives from the U.S. Mission to the EU, a NATO Operational Headquarters, and the U.S. Mission to NATO.

Highlights included a working lunch with U.S., German, and International Secretariat officials focused on NATO’s out-of-area operations and a briefing by Ambassador Victoria Nuland, U.S. Representative to NATO. The reporters gained an inside perspective on NATO’s ongoing transformation as well as current operations in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, and elsewhere.
