Move of Staff of Amerika Haus Frankfurt to New Consulate Office Building

Amerika Haus To Continue To Host Events

September 29, 2005. The 11 employees of the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Consulate General Frankfurt will be moving into the new consulate building in Gießener Straße in Frankfurt-Eckenheim from the Amerika Haus in Staufenstraße 1.

Consul Scott Rauland, Director of the Amerika Haus, emphasized at a press conference, "The U.S. Consulate General will continue the full range of its cultural activities from the new building. The Amerika Haus will continue to play an important role as a venue for events." For example, in cooperation with the City of Frankfurt’s Press- and Information Office, a Youth Exchange Fair "Hello World" at Amerika Haus on October 6 will provide information on exchange programs for students. A reading by U.S. author Anthony Doerr on October 19 and a concert of the hr Big Band on December 8 will continue the series "America Meets Frankfurt" at the Amerika Haus.

History:

In November 1945, a reading room in the basement of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange was the precursor for the Amerika Haus in Taunusanlage 11, which opened on May 22, 1946. In 1957, the City of Frankfurt hired the American architectural firm Skidmore, Owens & Merrill to design the current building on Staufenstraße 1 in cooperation with German architect Otto Apel. From the start, the Amerika Haus has contributed to the cultural identity of the City of Frankfurt. As a branch of the United States Information Service and, since 1999, the U.S. Department of State it has offered a broad range of information and programs on American culture, politics, economy and society. This tradition will continue after the staff move to the Public Affairs Section of the new Consulate General Office Building. The Public Affairs Section will continue to organize and participate in numerous programs in Hessen, Rheinland-Pfalz, Baden-Württemberg, and Saarland focused on American culture and society in order to provide a broad understanding of the United States.
