“MEETUS”-Workshops on American Dream and 2008 U.S. Elections
September 29-October 1, 2008. The U.S. Consulate General organized three “MeetUS”-workshops on “The American Dream” and on “The U.S. Election System and the 2008 Elections” at the Viktoria-Schule Darmstadt and the Rhein-Main-School in Hofheim. The students discussed the historical, philosophical, religious and political origins and bases of the American Dream and pointed to alternative concepts and challenges to the American Dream during the course of American history. As part of an extended election workshop in Hofheim, the class had to break up into 2 “campaign headquarters” for “John McCain,” and “Barack Obama” preparing their respective candidate for the following “live-TV debate” moderated by Consul Jeanine Collins, head of the consulate's press and cultural section. Actively functioning as campaign staffers and as candidates, the students gained deep insights into the various campaign issues and what it means to be involved in political campaigning.
