Holly-Jane Rahlens Enchants Children At State Library Festival In Rhineland Palatinate
October 28-30, 2008. As a contribution to the Rhineland-Palatinate state-wide library festival, the U.S. Consulate General and Rowohlt Publisher sponsored several readings by Holly-Jane Rahlens, American writer resident in Berlin, in cities throghout the state. Holly-Jane Rahlens, winner of the German Youth Literature Prize, enganged some 300 students in readings from her latest youth novel “Memoirs of an Ex-Cheerleader” (working title*), set in New York in the early sixties. Under the patronage of Minister President Kurt Beck the festival featured over 360 events at over 150 libraries from October 24 – 31.
With her stories, Holly-Jane Rahlens educated the students in an entertaining and playful way about American history and the American way of life. Since she also touched on Jewish life in Germany and the Holocaust, the students were also exposed to German history without the feeling of being lectured.
* The Book has not been published in English yet. The German title "Mein kleines großes Leben" has been published by Rowohlt in 2008.
