November 16, 2007. Consul General Jo Ellen Powell visited the Grand Finale of Frankfurt's 2007 HipHop project, an urban dance battle that took place at the Gallus Theater on November 16. Eight dance teams caught the flow and battled to win a spot at the “Funkin-Stylez” dance competition in Berlin. The battle was accompanied by the WordUp Poetry Slam and a concluding jam session. Judges Mr. Wiggles from New York, SIN a.k.a. Fatma Yazici, Claw and Miriam graded each of the 5-person crews on creativity, originality, expression and difficulty of moves.
The audience in the Gallus Theater, mostly teens and adolescents, enjoyed the festivities and thrived on the expression and passion of each of the crews. Each group showed their athleticism and creativity during their appearances on the stage. The winners, Punica Classics, went on to compete in Berlin on the 18th of November. The winner of the WordUp poetry slam was also rewarded with a lovely prize for his lyrical skills.
The Hip Hop party was a combined effort by the United States Consulate General in Frankfurt, the Frankfurter Jugendring, the Jugendhaus am Bügel, and the Otto-Hahn-Schule, among many others.
