Dancing Students Connect with Enthusiastic Freiburg Audience
July 15, 2008. This year’s work of the New York based Battery Dance Company in Germany concluded on July 15 with an outstanding performance of a total of 100 schoolchildren from eight Freiburg schools at two sold out shows at the Freiburg Theater. Frankfurt Consul General Jo Ellen Powell welcomed an enthusiastic audience on behalf of Mission Germany. This summer, the dancers and teaching artists under the leadership of choreographer Jonathan Hollander brought their successful transatlantic intercultural program "Dancing to Connect", a unique arts education program, to Stuttgart, Berlin, and Freiburg. The school children aged 14-18 created their own choreographies along the themes of tolerance and intercultural understanding during the 5 day workshops with the dancers. With the accompanying research of the Freiburg Educational College, this project breaks new ground for the development of school curricula nationwide regarding intercultural learning and English as a foreign language.
