December 13, 2005. Imam Abdul-Rasheed Muhammad, the first Islamic Chaplain in the U.S. Armed Forces, visited the Fatima Zehra Mosque and the Amerika Haus in Frankfurt on December 13. He discussed his work and experience as a Muslim chaplain and Major in the American military now stationed in Kiztingen/Bavaria with members of the Muslim community in the Rhein-Main region, among them fellow imams and representatives of the cultural, consular and business communities.

Chaplain Muhammad’s interlocutors were surprised to hear that as a Muslim chaplain he had successfully worked with Rabbis and Christian ministers in caring for the sick and dying of all religions both in the U.S. and at U.S. military bases abroad and that he and his wife had always been fully accepted as Muslims by their fellow American citizens. They were also reminded of the systematic repression and killing of Iraqi Muslims and their imams by Saddam Hussein and of the responsibility of religious leaders to promote tolerance and friendship between the world’s different religions and between the variations within one faith.
