Selected Events 2005Mrs. Timken and Mrs. Bodde Inspire Students with Reading about the 'Candybomber' |
||
October 13, 2005. Mrs. Timken and Mrs. Bodde presented a new childrens’ book about the famous ‘candy bomber’ Gail Halvorsen to a group of 5th graders at a school in Enkheim, Frankfurt, and educated them about the special German-American relationship after WWII. The children were especially excited when they distributed little 'candybombs' to illustrate the story and the critical role the recently closed Rhein-Main Air Base played in the Berlin airlift. They also engaged a class of 12th graders, many of whom had been to the U.S. on school exchanges, in a lively discussion about differences in German and American lifestyle and school systems as well as the personal experiences the students had made in the U.S. To round off the reading event, the school library received a set of books from the former Rhein-Main Air Base library, which was donated to the Frankfurt public library. |
