March 2, 2007. Deputy Principal Officer Richard Aker and curator of the Fotografie Forum international, Celina Lunsford, opened the exibition "Bound for Glory. America in Color (1939-1943)" on March 2nd. It will be shown at Fotografie Forum international until April 29th, 2007.
In the late 1930s twelve photographers, hired by the Farm Security Administration (FSA) of the U.S. government, worked for eight years to record the appalling conditions under which the rural population lived during the economic crisis of the Great Depression. This largest and most significant documentary project in the history of photography resulted in more than 160,000 pictures currently kept at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. These include classic icons of photographic history such as "Migrant Mother" by Dorothy Lange and work by Walker Evans. A less known fact is that from 1939 a number of photographers also worked in color. This resulted in unique pictures of high quality that were only recently cataloged. These photographs are being presented for the first time in Germany. This exhibition was organized by the FOAM Fotografiemuseum in Amsterdam, where it was first seen in 2006. The exhibition was made in cooperation with the Library of Congress and is a collaboration of the Fotografie Forum international, FOAM Amsterdam and the U.S. Consulate General Frankfurt.
