October 10, 2005. U.S. Ambassador Timken joined General Foglesong, Commander of the U.S. Air Force in Europe, Dr. Wilhelm Bender, the Chairman of Fraport, and other leading American and German dignitaries in a ceremony commemorating the closure of the Rhein-Main Air Base in Frankfurt on October 10.
The air base, which has been operated by the Americans since 1945, played a crucial role during the Berlin Airlift in 1948-49. Fraport will use the facilities to further develop the Frankfurt International Airport, while the U.S. military will use expanded facilities in Ramstein and Spangdahlem to replicate Rhein-Main's place in America's global airlift network.
