Opening of Stuttgart’s American Days features the Wings of Dixie and the Spirit of Change
May 6th, 2009. On May 6th, Consul General Jo Ellen Powell opened Stuttgart’s second "American Days" at the Neues Schloss along with representatives of the state of Baden-Württemberg, the city of Stuttgart, the Bosch Foundation and the Board of the James-F.-Byrnes Institute.  This year’s American Days festival is the second time that Minister President Oettinger's  concept of celebrating  German American friendship has been realized.  More than forty German-American organizations will feature events highlighting the cultural commonalties and strong transatlantic relationship in more than 90 events from May 6th through 17th.  The James-F.-Byrnes-Institute had organized the series of events in cooperation with the cultural office of the city of Stuttgart, the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg  and the Robert Bosch Foundation.

In her remarks, Consul General Powell pointed to the various events dealing with President Barack Obama and the new administration and also talked about the president’s recent visit to Baden-Württemberg during the NATO summit.  The Consul General Powell thanked the German American Institutes in Freiburg, Heidelberg, Tübingen and Stuttgart for their assistance in bringing some thousand German students and other citizens to President Obama’s town hall meeting in Strasbourg shortly before the summit.

After the opening speeches, the "Wings of Dixie," Ensemble of the United States Air Forces in Europe, entertained the enthusiastic audience of 500 with their repertoire. Program | Full text remarks
