"Dancing to Connect" Touches Hearts and Minds in Stuttgart at Opening of American Days

June 26, 2008. On June 26, Consul General Jo Ellen Powell opened the first American Days in Stuttgart at the city's Wilhelma Theater along with Baden-Württemberg's Minister of the Interior, Stuttgart's Lord Mayor, the Director of the Board of the James-F.-Byrnes Institute, and a representative of the Robert Bosch Foundation. Minister President Oettinger's idea of celebrating the German American friendship in an American Days festival has been realized by the James-F.-Byrnes-Institute in cooperation with the cultural office of the city of Stuttgart and the Robert Bosch Foundation. The 10-day long program features the strong transatlantic relationship in more than 80 events.

Consul General Powell introduced the consulate's contribution to the festival's opening: the transatlantic intercultural program Dancing to Connect, a unique arts education program that has brought together teens from the Stuttgart region with American professional dancers of the highly acclaimed Battery Dance Company and Drastic Action from New York. At the gala performance, 80 students from five local schools shared the stage with their American mentors presenting works that have been created in workshops held over the previous week.
