Meine sehr geehrten Damen und Herren,

Es freut mich ganz besonders, dass ich heute Abend hier mit Ihnen in Stuttgart sein kann – der Hauptstadt eines Bundeslandes, bei dessen Gründung die Vereinigten Staaten eine große Rolle gespielt haben.  Hier in Stuttgart trat am 6. September 1946 mit der „Rede der Hoffnung“ des amerikanischen Außenministers James F. Byrnes die entscheidende Wende in den deutsch-amerikanischen Nachkriegs-Beziehungen ein.

Herr Innenminister Rech, ich möchte mich ganz herzlich für Ihr Engagement für die Deutsch-Amerikanische Freundschaft und für Ihre Unterstützung der American Days bedanken. Man merkt deutlich, wie sich Ihre Begeisterung für Projekte wie diese auf das ganze Land überträgt, und es ist ein Grund, warum ich so oft und so gerne hierher komme.

It is a great pleasure to be among America’s many friends here in Stuttgart and Baden-Württemberg.  Your great civic institutions, vibrant economy, rich cultural life, and most important, you yourselves, the people of this region, are the backbone of the German-American partnership we are celebrating  this evening here in your beautiful Wilhelma Theater! 

American Days is a wonderful 10-day long program with more than 80 events, celebrating the German-American partnership.  Thanks to your generous support and participation, events like this strengthen the transatlantic dialogue and enrich the cultural exchanges that are the foundations of our friendship.

I would like to extend my special thanks to the Kulturamt der Landeshauptstadt Stuttgart, the Robert Bosch Foundation, the Landesstiftung Baden-Württemberg and the James Byrnes Institute for making these American Days in Stuttgart possible. 

I would also like to thank the other sponsors of this evening’s opening event: The Marriott Hotel in Stuttgart/ Sindelfingen and Cerberus Capital Management in New York and  Frankfurt, for their generous contributions.

Dancing to Connect is a very special arts education program in which professional American dancers mentor and assist young local talent to create dances from their own imaginations and experiences.  Last year, Dancing to Connect brought together two New York dance companies,  Jonathan Hollander’s Battery Dance Company and Aviva Geismar’s Drastic Action, with the Freiburg Pedagogical University and a number of schools in Freiburg.  

This year, Dancing to Connect  brings together  teens from five Stuttgart schools to create a very special program whose themes are tolerance, integration and inter-cultural understanding.  As Jonathan Hollander put it: Dancing to Connect means “Touching the hearts and minds of young people through dance.”  

Thank you so much, Jonathan Hollander and Aviva Geismar, and the members of the Battery Dance Company and Drastic Action, for all your hard, inspired, and inspiring work.

And let’s not forget the stars of tonight’s show: the students of Stuttgart’s high schools!  Ihr und Eure Lehrer habt unglaublich viel Arbeit, Energie und Enthusiasmus in dieses Projekt gesteckt - viel Glück und viel Erfolg!
